About Black Hills Regional Ski for Light
Our History
In 1978, Ski for Light International held its annual event at Deer Mountain in the Black Hills. Several local individuals who volunteered at that event decided to organize an annual program in the Black Hills.
In January 1979, Black Hills Regional Ski for Light (BHSFL) was born when 31 skiers and 31 guides attended the first event at Deer Mountain. While cross-country skiing remains a major part of the BHSFL winter program, in 1980, downhill skiing was introduced with four participants.
More than 250 people from across the country and around the world now enjoy the unique camaraderie of BHSFL winter events each year.
In 1984, a weekend camping trip at Angostura Reservoir became the first summer event in our Summer Light program. In 2001, Summer Light moved to Camp Bob Marshall where it remains today.
Black Hills Regional Ski for Light is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which is managed by a board of directors.
